Nguyen Hong Nhung, aka Romi, is an ambitious 22-year-old graduate from the University of Social Sciences & Humanities (Viet Nam National University of Ha Noi). She received her B.A. degree in Linguistics (Honors programme) in October 2007.
Her thesis, entitled “An initial approach to study the HIV/AIDS language in Vietnamese print media (based on the data of Tuoi Tre newspaper from
June 2000 to January 2007)” was carried out from February to May 2007. It was supervised by Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Binh, a cultural anthropologist at the Institute of Linguistics.
As a requirement from the university, the thesis was unfortunately written in Vietnamese, not English. But hopefully, this bilingual blog can afford you some glimpse of the research.
By sharing some certain parts of her writing on the Internet, Romi hopes that it will be helpful to someone, especially those who are doing research on related themes and those who would like to read how a young Vietnamese looks at her country’s social issues. Although people may find the English translation/writing unnatural, please disregard the mistakes. After all, English is a second language to Romi anyway.

Hi Romi!
It’s so great to bump into your website and your blog tonight!
I happened to know your blog thanks to searching for Mr. Trinh Lu on the Internet, and saw your entry on Trinh Lu and VTL in an interview on VCTV1.
I’m a teacher of English in English Deparment, Hanoi University, so that’s one of the reasons that makes me more interested in your writings. How’s your thesis? Is it due yet?
By linguistics, does it mean that you study in Khoa Ngôn ngữ học, or you do English studies or another foreign language as a major?
I truly find your blog interesting. I’ll certainly spend more time exploring it. Thanks! VA
